Houston Toad- Anaxyrus houstonensis

  • Status – Endangered
  • Estimated numbers – 3,000–4,000
  • Population trend – Decreasing
  • Location – Houston and Bastrop County, Texas
  • Why are they under threat – Habitat conversion poses the most serious threat, with cars on roads a major problem. Converting woodlands to pastures or ploughed fields destroys their habitat. Other threats include prolonged drought and the presence of fire ants, an unwelcome species from Brazil.
  • What can you do – Help raise money for frog species around the world with the Amphibians Aurvival Alliance.
